Frederick and Joan Winter Student Travel Bursary
\nfor graduate and post-doctoral studies in Greece and the wider Mediterranean<\/h3>\n

Professor Frederick Winter, formerly professor of Art History at the University of Toronto, made many contributions to Classical Archaeology, but he will be remembered best for his masterly monographs,\u00a0Greek Fortifications<\/em>\u00a0(1971) and\u00a0Studies in Hellenistic Architecture<\/em>\u00a0(2006), as well as a series of articles in the\u00a0American Journal of Archaeology<\/em>\u00a0(1976-1982) entitled \u201cTradition and Innovation in Doric Design I \u2013 IV.\u201d His wife, Joan, was a constant companion in his field research, an assistant in gathering data and an invaluable sounding board for ideas. Between them, Fred and Joan visited an extraordinary number of classical sites, firmly believing in the importance of seeing a location for oneself.<\/p>\n

Now, as a permanent support and assistance for Canadian student fieldwork in Greece and the Mediterranean, following in their formidable footsteps, Prof. Winter\u2019s family has established the Frederick and Joan Winter Student Travel Bursary through the Canadian Institute in Greece.<\/p>\n

The applicant must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant, pursuing graduate or post-doctoral studies, and have a clear need to travel either in Greece or the wider Mediterranean, for purposes of research in any field of Hellenic studies, ancient to mediaeval.<\/p>\n

Within three months of the end of the travel period, a brief report must be sent by the bursary recipient to the Chair of the CIG Fellowships Committee describing the work that was accomplished.<\/p>\n

In any subsequent publication of the research work done under the auspices of this bursary, the recipient shall acknowledge both the Canadian Institute in Greece and the Frederick and Joan Winter Student Travel Bursary.<\/p>\n

One or more bursaries will be offered each year, amounting to a total of CAD $3,000.<\/p>\n

CIMS-CIG Student Travel Bursary
\nfor undergraduate studies in Greece<\/h3>\n

Thanks to a generous donation from the Canadian Institute for Mediterranean Studies (CIMS), the Canadian Institute in Greece (CIG) is proud to be able to offer the CIMS-CIG Student Travel Bursary. The bursary aims to support undergraduate students based at a Canadian university who have reason to travel to Greece. Travel could be for the purpose of participating in an archaeological project, attending a summer program or study abroad experience, or participation in some other academic activity that requires the student to be in Greece. We are particularly interested in supporting students who identify as members of historically underrepresented groups.<\/p>\n

The applicant must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant, pursuing undergraduate studies, and have a clear need to travel in Greece for purposes of research in any field of Hellenic studies, ancient to modern.<\/p>\n

Within three months of the end of the travel period, a brief report must be sent by the bursary recipient to the Chair of the CIG Fellowships Committee describing the work that was accomplished.<\/p>\n

Dr. Leander Tryphonas Study in Greece Bursary<\/h3>\n

Thanks to a generous donation from the Canadian Institute for Mediterranean Studies (Ottawa Chapter), and the Parnassos Cultural Society of Ottawa, the Canadian Institute in Greece (CIG) is proud to be able to offer the Dr. Leander Tryphonas Study in Greece Bursary. The bursary aims to support undergraduate students based at a Canadian university who have reason to travel to Greece.<\/p>\n

This is a merit-based award which aims to promote the diversity of students involved in archaeological projects and\/or study tours in Greece. Special consideration may be given to students applying from universities in Ottawa, the city where Dr. Tryphonas lived and worked for much of his professional career.<\/p>\n

The applicant must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant, pursuing undergraduate studies, and have a clear need to travel in Greece for participation in an archaeological project, to attend a summer program or study abroad experience, or to participate in some other academic activity that requires the student to be in Greece.<\/p>\n

Nota bene<\/em>: This award, subject to the discretion of the selection committee, may be awarded in conjunction with the “CIMS-CIG Student Travel Bursary” which covers travel-related expenses.<\/p>\n
